TLDSB students take part in Spring Fry Bread and Friends gatherings

The Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Indigenous Student Success Team (ISST) recently hosted Spring Fry Bread and Friends gatherings at every secondary school across the Board. These gatherings offered self-identified Indigenous students a full day of learning more about their culture, identity, and history alongside a friend.

The gatherings took place on the following dates:

  • April 8 at I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEW)
  • April 9 at Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI)
  • April 17 at Gravenhurst High School (GHS)
  • April 20 at Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS)
  • April 23 at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS)
  • May 12 at Fenelon Falls Secondary School (FFSS)

This spring’s events focused on Medicine Wheel teachings, and featured insights from Elders and Knowledge Holders, including Oshkaabewis Dave Rice of Wasauksing First Nation, Elder Christopher Stock from Wahta Mohawks First Nation, and Odawa Anishinaabe Knowledge Holder, Larry O’Connor.

Each session began with focusing on the four sacred medicines: sage, tobacco, cedar, and sweetgrass. Students then had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop where they made custom medicine bags from deer leather, selecting their own colours, paint, and design.

Please see the 2026 Spring Fry Bread and Friends video below for more information and highlights from the days.
