Mariposa Elementary School busts a move

Over the last two weeks, Mariposa Elementary School students took part in Jimmy Chapman’s high-energy breakdancing program.

All grades had an opportunity to take part in the sessions that not only align with the dance curriculum, but also focus on building self-esteem, confidence, and teamwork in an engaging and dynamic way. Students were taught how to do breakdancing moves, including the worm, pyramids, coffee grinder, the moonwalk, and the bomb. At the end of each session, students split into two groups and took part in friendly dance-off competitions.

“The program directly supports our School Improvement Plan, which emphasizes student success, well-being, and engagement through inclusive, hands-on learning experiences,” explained MES principal, David Sornbeger. “Jimmy’s program fosters a positive school climate, encourages active participation, and provides students with an opportunity to develop essential social-emotional skills in a creative and supportive environment.”

“Everybody laughed and had fun! He made it fun to try something new,” said Grade 5 student, Willa.

“He taught us in an entertaining way. It was fun and educational, and he pushed us to our limits without pushing us over them,” said Grade 8 student, Spencer.
