“I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.” DGH’s Terry Fox Run Happens On Friday, September 27th

posted in: Home Page News | 0

Terry Fox, as demonstrated by this quote, is truly a Canadian hero.

39 years after Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope, few would argue that Terry Fox is one of Canada’s greatest and most recognizable symbols.  I can’t think of a better quote by Terry Fox that sums up what he has achieved.  More than $750 million raised and major breakthroughs in the battle against this horrific disease – all because of his dream.

Support Terry’s dream and recognize his accomplishments.  Fundraise and donate what you can for DGH’s Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 27th.

Every cent truly counts.

Students Signing Out For Lunch During 2nd Nutrition Break

posted in: Home Page News | 0

If you are new to DGH or your child has reached the age where they are allowed to sign out for our 2nd Nutrition Break, some of the basic information is provided below.  A letter will be going home with students soon after school starts with more detailed information.

You can click on the link below to access the letter that was sent home or will soon be sent home.

  • students will be permitted to sign out to go to the stores/restaurants or their own home for the 2nd Nutrition Break/Recess only.
  • students should NOT be travelling any further than the 4 “corners” as there are no stores or restaurants beyond this point (the only exception is if his/her home is beyond the 4 corners).  In NO case should students be playing by the river or playing around the bridge as this represents a serious safety concern.  As well, the area around the arena is out of bounds.
  • if your son/daughter is going to be allowed to sign out and visit the stores/restaurants or their own home on a regular basis (e.g., any day of the week), please provide a note stating that they will be allowed to do so.  Please include your child’s name, your name, and the date in neat and legible handwriting.  A list will be compiled from these notes and kept at the office.
  • if your son/daughter is only going to be allowed to sign out once in a while, please write a note and indicate that it is only for that day that he/she may sign out.  Your son/daughter should bring the note to the office and give to Mrs. Starr or Mrs. Taylor.

DGH Is A Peanut And Tree Nut Safe School

posted in: Home Page News | 0

Please click on the link below to view a copy of the letter that has been/will be sent home with students.

DGH endeavours to be a “Peanut and Tree Nut Safe School.”  We encourage all parents to NOT send food containing peanut, peanut products, or tree nuts (e.g., almonds, Brazil nuts) to school.  DGH currently has students attending the school who are highly allergic to nuts and nut products.

Should a student mistakenly/accidentally bring a food item to school that contains or has come into contact with nuts, they will be asked to place the item back in their lunch bag.  Should the student absolutely need to eat that food item, they may do so in the office.

We recognize that it can be an inconvenience not being able to send peanut butter sandwiches or products containing nuts to school; however, we would all agree that if it was our child who had a life-threatening allergy we would want everything reasonably possible done to keep him or her safe.

Should you have any questions regarding our Peanut and Tree Nut Safe School Policy, feel free to contact the school’s office.

We are looking forward to meeting everyone! The purpose of the evening is for families to have a chance to see their child’s classroom and to meet their child’s teacher and staff. As always, we ask that if you would like a more indepth conversation or meeting, to please arrange for a separate meeting time.

Please find below a copy of the letter sent home with students last week.

Grades 4 To 8 Students Should Have A Lock For Their Lockers

posted in: Home Page News | 0

We are encouraging all students in grades 4 to 8 to purchase a lock for their lockers. In the past couple of years, we have noticed a decline in the number of students putting locks on their lockers. This is an issue as unlocked lockers make it more likely for items to go missing (and with the cost of anything electronic today, we certainly do not want that). The lock which still seems to last the longest is still the “old school” style lock that were used 10 or more years ago. Students are welcome to use different style locks (e.g., locks with the 4 directional triangles or letter combinations); however, they do not seem to last as long.

Please Call Safe Arrival Line If Your Child Is Going To Be Absent or Late

posted in: Home Page News | 0

Please remember to post the safe arrival number by your phone so you can call and leave a message should your child(ren) be absent.  When a student is late or absent and the school has not been informed, office staff go to great lengths to determine if the student is safe.  A short message on the Safe Arrival Line helps eliminate this issue.

The Safe Arrival Line is:

705-786-1915

(this is the main line for the school – the voice box will be on before 8:15 a.m. and after 4:15 p.m.)
