Donate Your Pop Tabs to the School!

posted in: Home Page News | 0

DGH school community, we are looking for your pop tabs!  For the past several years, Mr. Hetherington has collected pop tabs, which are then donated to the Lions Club.  The Lions Club then take the pop tabs to a metal recycler and use the money from this to purchase wheel chairs.  In the past, Mr. Hetherington has collected BAGS full of pop tabs!  Over the years many, many wheelchairs have been purchased because of this!  Quite simply, this is a great cause to support.

This year, the Lions Club brought in a bucket for the pop tabs.  We have placed the bucket in the office and are looking for pop tabs!  Simply bring them in and add to the bucket!

DGH – let’s see how many tabs we can collect in the next 6 months!

Ms. McColl’s Grade 6 Sewers!

posted in: Home Page News | 0

While the post may be a bit belated (I can only get so much out on the website at certain times!), the grade 6s in Ms. McColl’s class need to be recognized for their sewing skills!  One of their Christmas activities was sewing and you can see the results in the photos below.  Having sewn a few buttons on shirts (this is Mr. Parish writing), I have great appreciation for the patience and skill shown by these students!  All students finished their product before the Christmas break and I have no doubt that many (probably all!) have been tucked away by family members as a wonderful future memory.

OPP’s LCBO “Think of Me” Bag Winners!

posted in: Home Page News | 0

Each year the OPP sponsor a contest where students are asked to decorate bags with a message about the dangers of drinking and driving for local LCBO stores – called “Think of Me”.  The message is still an important one as drinking and driving kills far too many people in Ontario each year.  Many of our DGH classes participated in the bag decoration program.  Better yet, many of our DGH students were winners in her/his category!

Congratulations to (l to r) Sydney Taylor, Beth Strange, Laney Durward, Emma Hewitt and Tara Carvalho whose bags were declared winners!  Special congratulations to Ms. Burns’ grade 5 students (Beth, Laney and Emma) who, I believe, swept the grade 5 division!

LCVI Band Visits on January 13th at 11:30 am

posted in: Home Page News | 0

DGH will again be welcoming the LCVI band on Friday, January 13th.  LCVI’s band performs each year around this year – which is  perfect timing as grade 8 students will soon be filling out their course selection sheets.  More than a few of our students, no doubt, will be choosing instrumental music as an optional course for grade 9.  The LCVI band always contains more than a few DGH grads, making the visit that much more special.

LCVI Guidance Counsellors Visit DGH’s Grade 8s on January 13th

posted in: Home Page News | 0

While we aren’t even quite half way through the year (!) our grade 8s will soon be selecting their courses for grade 9.  LCVI’s guidance counsellors will be visiting our grade 8s this Friday, January 13th, to talk about the different pathways available (e.g., locally developed, applied and academic) and how high school differs from elementary school.  This is a great opportunity for our grade 8s to begin their transition to high school (as scary as that may sound to parents and guardians!!!).

The LCVI grade 8 Parent Information Night takes place on Thursday, January 19th at 6:00 pm.

The guidance counsellors will be back on Tuesday, January 24th and our grade 8s will be filling out their course selections online.

DGH school community, we welcome back our students on Monday, January 9th.  We hope that everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday and are recharged for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year!  With a little over 2 months to the March Break, the rest of the school year really feels like a mad dash!  Once March Break hits there are sooooo many things taking place that one can hardly keep up!!!  This is a great thing – DGH is a school where students have many different extra-curriculars and activities in which to become involved!  See you tomorrow, students!

Ms. Burns’ and Ms. McColl’s Class Trip on February 6th

posted in: Home Page News | 0

We definitely did not enjoy these types of trips when I was in school (this is Mr. Parish writing the post)!  Students in Ms. Burns’ and Ms. McColl’s classes will enjoy a fun and active field trip on Monday, February 6th when they head off to Lazer Quest and then Legends for swimming.  The Lazer Quest facility is outstanding; Legends has a huge swimming pool – the kids are going to love the day!
