DGH School Community, our school has begun its Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION.
Why do I support the Heart and Stroke Foundation? The money raised for this foundation has helped to save thousands of lives since 1952 (when the foundation was started). I have my own personal connection (this is Mr. Parish writing).
Only a few weeks ago, over the Easter Holiday, I got to see my father (and my kids their grandfather) because of the research and advances that have taken place in the past 60 years. Why? In the past 6 years my father has survived a heart attack and 2 strokes.
40 years ago, had this happened, I would have probably lost my father. Today, my father has almost entirely recovered! Without the research that has taken place my father would never have seen his grandchildren skate, play hockey, play lacrosse, go to his gardens, or even heard “I love you, grandfather” in the past 6 years. I KNOW how lucky I am to still have my father with me – which is why I support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He IS alive today because of the research and advances that have taken place.
The things that we take for granted each day are things which are bonuses for him! Growing vegetables in his gardens each spring and summer is something that he would no longer be able to do without advances in rehabilitation and the medicine that he takes daily. Making maple syrup (something he has done for more than 70 years) would not have been possible! Even driving to the grocery store on his own is something that he would likely be no longer able to do.
DGH – I KNOW there are many stories similar to mine in our school community. Whether it is your mother, father, grandfather or grandmother – many of our families have been impacted by heart attacks and strokes. Help support the Heart and Stroke Foundation by fundraising through DGH’s Jump for Heart event.
DGH’s Jump Rope for Heart date is Friday, May 1st.
– JK through to grade 5 students participate in the 1st Block
– grades 6 to 8 students who fundraise will participate in either the 2nd or 3rd Block. Grades 6 to 8 students have to fundraise at least $15 in order to participate!
Envelopes are due into the office this Friday, April 24th.
