Terry Fox Kick-Off Assembly – Fri., Sept 12th

DGH will hold its Terry Fox Kick-Off Assembly this Friday, September 12th in the 3rd Block.  During the Assembly students will learn about Terry Fox’s inspirational story and the benefits that come from the millions raised to fight cancer.

 

If you can, we ask that you support the Terry Fox Run with a donation.  Our school goal is $2000!  Every single cent counts towards fighting cancer!

 

Our Terry Fox Run takes place on Friday, September 26th.

 

Mr. Hetherington promises to the “lead the pack” in running this year!  Thank you, Mr. Hetherington!

I hope everyone had a safe and healthy summer. Now we are back to routines and busy lives.

 

It has been documented that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Below are some tips I have found online that might encourage your children to eat breakfast.

 

Ideas for Back to School Breakfasts

 

Perhaps your child will be tempted to eat these delicious choices:

 

• Make a parfait. Layer low fat yogurt with berries and top with granola.

• Pair whole-grain cereals, containing ≥ 5 grams of fiber and ≤ 10 grams of sugar, with low fat or fat free milk. Top with fresh or dried fruit.

• Have a special breakfast once a week featuring smoothies, pancakes, waffles, or omelets.

• For smoothies, blend low fat milk with frozen berries and a banana (or any fruit) and blend for 30 seconds.

• Serve unusual breakfast foods once in a while like last night’s leftovers.

• Opt for a whole fruit instead of fruit juice (but always choose 100% fruit juice when splurging).

 

For those children who need a top up later in the morning, our school offers a breakfast program. It is a “grab and go” version, in which students select some food from trays set up in three locations in the school. The trays are stocked with foods from the four food groups. This program will begin, hopefully, on September 15.

DGH Lockers

LOCKERS

 

Students in Grades 4-8 will be assigned individual lockers.  Students are to bring their own lock; however, they must provide their homeroom teacher with the combination.  In the event that we have a problem with a lock brought from home, we may have to cut the lock to open it.  Please be aware that should a lock be cut (e.g., because we suspect there may be something inappropriate in a locker)

 

Lockers are school property and as such may be opened by school personnel at any time.  Use of a secure locker may be denied if proper care is not being demonstrated.

DGH – Milk and Lunch Programme

The Milk programmes will begin for the last 2 weeks of September.  The price of milk will remain the same as last year – 0.75 cents per carton.  Money for this important program will once again be collected monthly.  Milk order forms will go home the second week of school.

 

Our Lunch Program (pizza, subs and pitas) will begin in October.  Lunch order forms go home later in September.

“Growing Together”

Earlier this year, the students in Ms. Schmiegelow’s class, with the support of the United Way, built 3 raised beds at the front on the school and planted a variety of vegetables.  This initiative helped support the science curriculum and promote environmental stewardship, as well as being a fun year-end project.  A number of families of the students in her class volunteered to tend the garden over the summer months.   A special thank you goes out to Clifford and April Brodie, the Martin, Carvalho, Howell-Taylor, Decloux, Vine, Fox and Murphy families for volunteering their time to keep the garden alive during July and August.  Cucumbers, zucchinis, beans, peas, lettuce and radishes were enjoyed.  Lots of tomatoes and the odd pumpkin continue to grow!

Meet the Staff Night – September 25th

Keep Thursday, September 25th, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., open for DGH’s annual Meet the Staff night!  On this night, staff will be in their classrooms from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will then be in the gym for pizza and “chit chat” until 7:00 p.m..  Please remember that the intent of this night is for parents and guardians to briefly meet with their child’s homeroom staff.  The intent is not for this to be an in-depth meeting regarding student progress to this point.  Should a parent/guardian seek more in-depth information, please schedule a separate meeting with your child’s teacher.

 

Like last year, parents will be able to order in advance pizza which will be available in the gym from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m..

 

This is your best opportunity at the beginning of the year to meet the staff in your child’s classroom!  The opportunity for parents to meet staff and vice versa is a critical one in the school year.  We hope that the majority of our parents and guardians will be able to attend.

Jimmy Chapman is Back at DGH!

“Jimmy Chapman” Is Coming Back To Dr. George Hall! 

(this information in letter form will be going home on September 8th or 9th)

 

Due to an overwhelming positive response by parents and students of DGH to last year’s breakdance session, we are very excited to announce that “Jimmy Chapman” is coming to Dr. George Hall once again!  Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will have an opportunity to learn cool new “breakdancing moves” in a fun and inclusive setting.  Jimmy will be visiting our school every Tuesday for six weeks starting September 16th.  This initiative supports the dance and fundamental movement components of the Physical Education Program.  Each class will participate in three breakdance sessions. Primary classes will begin dancing on September 16th,  with subsequent sessions on September 23rd and 30th.  Junior and Intermediate classes will begin their breakdancing on October 7th, followed by sessions on October 14th and 21st.  New moves and skills will be introduced each week.  All students will be participating in this initiative as part of their regular gym time.

We do, however, continue to need the help of our DGH families in bringing this exciting new initiative to our school.  Each student is asked to contribute $3.00 to help cover the costs associated with this presentation (that’s only $1.00 a lesson!). The remainder of the cost will be covered by school funds including fundraising. This is a fantastic opportunity for the girls and boys of DGH to experience this popular form of dance in a safe and supervised setting.  Please fill out the form below and return it to your child’s teacher.
